Preaching (1902)
  1. “Fruit” is the Christian character, the thing that spills out from all who have the spirit of God delivered to them in their baptism.
  2. Jesus will not give you a convenient, comfortable message to preach this Sunday. But, because He fixed His gaze on the cross, He has called you to something greater than convenience.
  3. The conference ministry tent is typically regarded as a spot to make connections, kill time, or scrounge empty calories. What I found out is how the ministry tent is an unexpected gold mine for Gospel proclamation.
  4. Little Willy Plays in Duty. In this episode, we read Steven Paulson’s Outlaw God, discussing the appeal of the Law (in the abstract), why old Adam loves pretending he has free will, the Ninevite Conundrum, Jonah’s wormy preacher, and our obsession with placing therapy alongside Christ as a means of grace.
  5. On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss the two words the preacher is called to give: the binding word, and the loosing word.
  6. Preachers are called upon to report the events that took place as Jesus journeyed towards the cross with the intention of reassuring our hearers of the trustworthiness of Christ’s work for their salvation.
  7. The sermon that saves will be the sermon which presents the Gospel and delivers the object of that faith: the Christ who is son, heir, and gifter of that same status for those who receive and believe the Gospel.
  8. The people of Isaiah’s day had rejected God and His presence in the Temple just as much as people live in contempt of God’s Word and sacraments today.
