In this first session, I'll give you a historical and philosophical overview of Apologetics. There is a lot of ground for us to cover, so this session will be a little longer than the rest. But I think you'll really enjoy it.

Throughout this course, I'd ask that you keep a couple things on the back-burner as we explore the topic of Apologetics:

\n
    \n
  1. First, our goal when using Apologetics is never to simply win an argument. Instead, it should always be to remove obstacles on the way to the cross. Saving faith and assurance is found in Christ alone, so everything we say and do should ultimately point people to the cross.

  2. \n
  3. Second, it is just as important to understand why a question is being asked, as it is to understand how best to answer it. People aren't always looking for a philosophical answer or evidential proof–more often than not, they need someone to listen and proclaim the Gospel to them.
  4. \n
\n

I'm excited for this.
Let's get started, shall we?

I hope you enjoyed the first session.

In Lesson #2, we're going to cover The Historical Apologetic approach. This approach, made popular by John Warwick Montgomery and C.S. Lewis, is critical for the Christian apologist to understand and know.

All of Christianity's claims rest squarely on one historical event: The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:16-19, \"If Christ has not been raised...we are of all people most to be pitied.\" But he did rise and the evidence aligns with the resurrection.

Enjoy the lesson!

We're over halfway finished! I hope you're enjoying this course.
Our next session covers Arguments for God's Existence. I think you'll like this one.

The argument's for God's existence are strong. Nevertheless, the 'New Atheist' movement has enjoyed a lot of popularity during the last few decades. We'll cover three main arguments:

1. The Contingency Argument
2. The Cosmological Argument
3. The Moral Argument

As we think through these arguments, I'd like you to keep this in mind: Convincing someone that God does, in fact, exist is important. Yet someone can theoretically believe that a God exists and still not know the God of Christianity that died on a cross and rose again. So, it's crucial that you get the skeptic or unbeliever to consider the claims of Christ as quickly as possible.

In this session, we're going to take a look at the Integrity of the New Testament. After all, so much of the historical argument we discussed earlier in this course relies on in it. We'll take a look at questions like:

1. “How do we know who wrote the Gospels, since the originals didn’t have signatures?”
2. “How confident can we be in the dating of these documents?”
3. “Can a document that has misspellings, slight transcription errors be considered reliable?”

All of these questions are part of one bigger question that we should ask when approaching the New Testament, especially with nonbelievers and skeptics: “Can we be confident that the Gospels–Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John–are reliable texts telling us about the life of Jesus?”

Introduction to Apologetics

At some point in your life, you are going to encounter people who object to Christianity–perhaps, you already have. Maybe it is a friend or family member who cannot believe that an all-powerful, all-loving God exists, given all of the pain and suffering in the world. Or, maybe it’s a coworker who insists that miracles simply do not happen and, therefore, Christ could not have risen from the dead.

1 Peter 3:15 exhorts all Christians to “be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have,” and to do so with gentleness and respect.

Join Dr. Adam Francisco–Editor of ‘The Resurrection Fact’ and Executive Editor of 1517–as he explains the basics of Apologetics and helps you answer tough apologetic questions.
