Preaching (2002)
  1. As we hear what God is doing, we begin to realize how true freedom and joy in this life are not about managing our reality but, like Joseph, about faithfully receiving what God is doing.
  2. When God is truly present among us, how can we not, in turn, respond with love for Him?
  3. How does God meet you in unexpected ways today? How does God meet you with unexpected grace?
  4. There is a hiddenness to the splendor of the Messianic reign and rule of God for now that will only be seen fully on the final day.
  5. Knowing the coming Judge as the one who endured for me changes the waiting of endurance into, indeed, a “we can hardly stand the wait.”
  6. Faint of heart or strong, Advent finds us all in a world that shakes our faith and drives us to wonder about the work and promises of this God who claims to love us.
  7. What would the world be like without Christmas? That is, what would it be like without the declaration of Christmas: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”?
  8. The Baptizer is a prophet who has more of the Word of God in his pointer finger than most preachers have in their whole body!
  9. This text invites you and your people to see in the Christ not only the welcome but the inspiration to welcome the other, indeed the enemy, not simply to put up with, but to love.
