Preaching (2022)
  1. The account of the transfiguration of Jesus is indeed about His transfiguration. But, in a way, it is also about the transfiguration of everything else.
  2. Transfiguration looks like one thing. The majesty mockery of Christ’s passion looks like another.
  3. Seasonally, the text forms a bridge to the ascent of Jesus to Mount Tabor and, ultimately, to Calvary, so we can receive the Gospel of God which saves us.
  4. How can you get a righteousness which exceeds that of the most works obsessed Israelites and Pharisees and scribes?
  5. Yes, for a moment, Jesus asks the crowds to stop and to look at this beautiful vision. He offers a scenic outlook to the inhabitants of this world.
  6. Bayer shows the wonder and the glory that is found in the God who creates faith through the Word we are sent to preach, the Word that gives us certainty in Christ preached and promised.
  7. Jesus not only claims our present moment, but He does so with the grace of eternity. The beatitudes are filled with promises of future blessing.
  8. This is the heart of Christian theology: The Gospel is the word of the cross, and the word of the cross is the Gospel.
  9. Doing better is the only way to get those covenant blessings back. Since this is impossible there is seemingly no gospel in this text at all. That is, unless we remove ourselves from the picture.
