Preaching (1996)
  1. The Baptizer is a prophet who has more of the Word of God in his pointer finger than most preachers have in their whole body!
  2. This text invites you and your people to see in the Christ not only the welcome but the inspiration to welcome the other, indeed the enemy, not simply to put up with, but to love.
  3. There is a hiddenness to this revelation of God’s reign and rule. It appears first like a shoot and ends with the reign of this Davidic messiah over a peaceable kingdom of opposites.
  4. Today, on the First Sunday of Advent, on the First Sunday of the Church Year, Jesus invites us to bring to Him our humble places.
  5. The Christ of Romans 13:8-14 is the one who is returning to fulfill our salvation even as we wait, living with one another in Christian love.
  6. We are all waiting eagerly for the Christmas Manger in Advent, but we must see the Word made flesh’s (strange the think about) final destination.
  7. Lutheran theology begins not with God in His terrifying majesty but with God in the flesh, God crucified for sinners. Advent is about this trajectory.
  8. When the “Book of Remembrance” is opened at the end of time there will be written on your ledger the words Jesus spoke to declare you righteous on account of His fully atoning death and glorious resurrection.
  9. He is Immanuel, God-with-us, and He is with His Church, very present where His name is, very present where His gifts are, and very present where His people are.
