Preaching (2008)
  1. Like John, we know some things about Jesus, and the things we know are very important. But there are other things about Jesus and His ways which elude us.
  2. In the servant song of chapter 42, God responds to the people. He responds by choosing His humble Servant to bring the right way to God’s people and to all the nations. He gives them His word that the anointed (messiah) one will mercifully bring them back to God.
  3. As you look to the water of your own baptism, consider not that the water is wet, but, rather, that it is rich with the Word and promise of God for one reason only: Because Jesus is in that water.
  4. “Where are God’s promises? Where does God work? Where are you?” and the answer is ever in Christ.
  5. What does Jesus’ identity as Son of God and son of Mary say to those who feel the burden of figuring out for themselves who they “really” are?
  6. Sometimes the answer God gives to our “ask” means the end of what we want and the advent of what He wants for us and the world.
  7. The consequences of Christmas are severe, and they do not stop in the little town of Bethlehem.
  8. We receive everything we need for our life and salvation from our Messiah Jesus. Think about how much He takes on just to have us.
  9. It is in the gritty that the Lord Jesus reveals Himself; always in the low, the palpable, the material, the immanent, inviting you to guide your own sermon for this Sunday after Christmas in the direction of delivering the grit.
