Matthew’s gospel speaks the truth in love, and the truth it speaks is the dead and living Lord Jesus exclusively, and all nations, Jews and Gentiles, inclusively.
The text stands as an exhortation and warning. The challenge will be to make sure it is also an encouragement to the failing and wayward disciples who sit before you.
Christ’s hands and feet, Christ’s very heart, are, indeed, the hands, feet, and heart of His servants, His slaves, those He has made free by dying as slave for them.
In His defeat at the hands of our sin and death we are granted victory over sin and death. The location of that victory is the cross. So, we do well to honor it, cherish it, indeed, boast in it.
On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss taking up one's cross, hating father and mother, and being a disciple of Christ.
