Preaching (2011)
  1. There is a hiddenness to the splendor of the Messianic reign and rule of God for now that will only be seen fully on the final day.
  2. Knowing the coming Judge as the one who endured for me changes the waiting of endurance into, indeed, a “we can hardly stand the wait.”
  3. Faint of heart or strong, Advent finds us all in a world that shakes our faith and drives us to wonder about the work and promises of this God who claims to love us.
  4. What would the world be like without Christmas? That is, what would it be like without the declaration of Christmas: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”?
  5. The Baptizer is a prophet who has more of the Word of God in his pointer finger than most preachers have in their whole body!
  6. This text invites you and your people to see in the Christ not only the welcome but the inspiration to welcome the other, indeed the enemy, not simply to put up with, but to love.
  7. There is a hiddenness to this revelation of God’s reign and rule. It appears first like a shoot and ends with the reign of this Davidic messiah over a peaceable kingdom of opposites.
