  1. Looking back on the year, the narrative we’re fed is that we should be able to show how much we’ve grown, how much we’ve done, all the successes we’ve had, how improved we are.
  2. Christians are given a new name at baptism. We are given the Triune name of Father, Son, and Spirit.
  3. God reveals Himself to us in Word and Sacrament but sometimes these revelations happen in unexpected ways.
  4. Every verse rings with the Gospel, declaring the giving of God the Father consisting of the Son and the Spirit and we, contrary to what we deserve for our sins, the recipients of His “lavish” love and grace.
  5. Solomon asks for what is necessary to carry out this task, an understanding/wise and discerning mind.
  6. A Pharisee invites Jesus over for dinner and a prostitute shows up. How far does the forgiveness of Jesus go?
  7. ‘What’s so great about Christmas?” That is the question which the preacher must answer!
  8. If the LORD is faithful to His Covenant—and He must be—then He will remember His people and take action.
  9. Christ busies Himself with accomplishing your salvation; race, age, sex, ability or even intelligence notwithstanding.
  10. On the other side of Christmas, we find (1) senseless suffering and (2) unstoppable salvation. A sermon on these verses should be honest about both.
