Pentecost (582)
  1. Our lingering sinful nature does not defeat or negate the work of Jesus. In Him, we are perfectly righteous, despite the sin which clings so closely.
  2. Like a good field general, to conclude his epistle, Paul equips us for battle. He gives us the gifts and the armor we need to “stand against the schemes of the devil."
  3. God does not leave His people alone, to find their own way and stumble around in the dark. The Lord goes with them in His Word.
  4. The presence of traditions is not the problem. It is the way in which we experience them. And on this day, Jesus reminds us of His presence, so all of us experience His grace.
  5. It is the humble who will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. Or, as Jesus said it elsewhere in Matthew: “The poor in spirit are blessed because theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”
  6. But Jesus did not come to be a bystander to His own creation. No, He came to be a redeemer of His people and to rule over all as the Lord of creation.
  7. Joshua is not offering Israel a choice. Really, he is giving them an option which is a “non-option.”
