Gospel (853)
  1. Trusting the Master to show mercy, he shows mercy in the name of the Master.
  2. Preaching this text is to call for joy, joy for the fellowship that has been found, the fellowship that gathers together this very day.
  3. Matthew’s gospel speaks the truth in love, and the truth it speaks is the dead and living Lord Jesus exclusively, and all nations, Jews and Gentiles, inclusively.
  4. To confess Christ crucified and risen as the only hope in a world that has lost its mind to wickedness and rage.
  5. The text stands as an exhortation and warning. The challenge will be to make sure it is also an encouragement to the failing and wayward disciples who sit before you.
  6. The reason Christians argue so much about the sacraments is because, deep down, they matter.
  7. He tries to open their eyes to see that the Sabbath is a time for saving life, not seeking to destroy it, for experiencing the love of God, not for practicing hatred.
  8. He is not a teacher who answers all sorts of speculative questions. He is your Savior, who answers the one question which matters the most for you: “How will you be saved?”
