  1. It is shocking to hear this word from both these readings, but it is meant to shock us to life, to wake us from the slumber of complacency, to see Christ in our neighbor.
  2. God chooses the foolish things of this world to shame the wise, the poor people of this world to shame the rich, he identifies with sinners and He cannot seem to get enough of those the world ignores.
  3. Trusting the Master to show mercy, he shows mercy in the name of the Master.
  4. The Nicene Creed is the gospel distilled—a refined and concentrated byproduct of Scripture’s own witness to the grace and power of God in Jesus Christ.
  5. Preaching this text is to call for joy, joy for the fellowship that has been found, the fellowship that gathers together this very day.
  6. Matthew’s gospel speaks the truth in love, and the truth it speaks is the dead and living Lord Jesus exclusively, and all nations, Jews and Gentiles, inclusively.
  7. To confess Christ crucified and risen as the only hope in a world that has lost its mind to wickedness and rage.
  8. The text stands as an exhortation and warning. The challenge will be to make sure it is also an encouragement to the failing and wayward disciples who sit before you.
  9. The reason Christians argue so much about the sacraments is because, deep down, they matter.
