1. History is the painful realization that we aren’t the ones who can save the world but, rather, we’re the ones who get saved.
  2. The undercurrent of Scripture is the sheer fact that Jehovah God is a God of his word.
  3. Our only hope in life and death is that God loves sinners, who fail and forget constantly, with a love that is just as constant.
  4. God's Son comes to deal with the infestation of sin, but in an unforeseen twist of grace, he’s the only one who goes under the knife.
  5. God is not a preoccupied parent, he’s an invested and interested tender loving Father. He values what perplexes us.
  6. This world of unbearable grief and accidental calamity is being renewed and, soon, will be completely bereft of every pernicious foe.
  7. The firestorm of the Reformation which turned Europe upside-down was not Luther’s doing. It was the Word, and the Spirit working through it.
  8. Even for idolatrous sellouts like you and me, God’s position has not changed. Even though we may have forgotten him, he never forgets us.
  9. The Word of Yahweh is not a trifling thing that can be visited only when it’s convenient. It’s a book of life, for all of life, that imparts life to those who believe in it and the God of it.
  10. The Son of God is still God the Son in the Incarnation.
  11. The essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man.
  12. God picks the unexpected and the unlikely, and goes to the unforeseen places, stacking the odds against himself, in order that age after age might stand in open-mouthed wonder at his sovereignty in and over all things.
