Death of Christ (208)
  1. When we come to God with our faithful obedience to make a case for our just cause, we expect to hear his deliverance in the form of a "yes."
  2. For those of us who recognize the disciples’ despair in ourselves, Jesus comes with the same word: “Relax, it’s me. Peace be with you.”
  3. What kind of shepherd does God provide? The answer, of course, starts and ends with Christ.
  4. Tomorrow Jesus will laugh his way out of the tomb, spit in the face of death, and kick the devil in the throat as he dances to the clapping glee of angelic masses. But today he just rests.
  5. You can’t bear your own sins, to say nothing of getting rid of them.
  6. The petition not to be led into temptation is found in just the right place within the seven petitions.
  7. Jesus Christ is our peace because he doesn't criticize us. He declares us freed from our perceptions to accept the truth about ourselves.
  8. "Is all that we see or seem, but a dream within a dream?" Poe is wrong. Though we have lulled ourselves asleep, the reality is far brighter and beautiful than we imagine. Christ is risen and so shall we. The dreamer who dreams is He.
  9. And because Jesus on the cross was sin in its entirety, God cannot look at him. He turns his face away, causing Jesus to cry out in utmost agony, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”
  10. Out of great pain and suffering often comes goodness, beauty, and truth. John Donne, born on the 22nd of January in 1573, is an excellent example of that for us in his masterful work, Death Be Not Proud.
  11. Perhaps this past year has prompted the recognition that God is not the tame projection of our highest hopes and dreams. Instead, he is the one who uses even his foes to make a point.
  12. Jesus overcame sin, death, and Satan on the cross. His bloody suffering and death marked this sinful world's defeat.
