Cultural Exegesis (204)
  1. When the direction of preaching is dictated by the hashtag issues of the day, the pulpit becomes the perpetual servant of CNN and Fox News. The news and social media cycle, with its chameleonic alterations from this all-important issue (this week) to that next-all-important issue (next week), does not create a rhythmic dance for the church but a sort of frenzied whack-a-mole worship. Now smack your homiletical hand down on this…now that…now this…now that. We need something better.
  2. Silence is an important and valuable tool for change and empathy, self-reflection, and learning.
  3. There is a time for justice. And there is a time for love. But love must always have the final word. Jesus must have the final word, because Jesus is God and God is Love.
  4. Is man essentially good? Most people think so despite the evidence. Since pot is now essentially legal - is it good? ok? What do you tell Johnny?
  5. The Thinking Fellows closeout 2019 with a discussion about New Year’s resolutions.
  6. Scott and Caleb Keith take this time to update listeners of the Thinking Fellows and ask for their support.
  7. Our smartphones, tablets, and laptops tempt us to enter into a virtual world without flesh and blood. A world without concrete, real consequences. No real pain or suffering, and no actual death.
  8. The Thinking Fellows sit down with Dave Zahl to talk about his new book.
  9. In this episode, the Thinking Fellows try to navigate the theological and philosophical problems of secular doomsaying.
  10. Dan talks about the second half of the 20th century and how it has led to the current cloudy question of where Christianity is headed.
  11. In the biblical world, having a few extra inches on your waistline was not a reason for dieting but dancing.
  12. On episode ONE HUNDRED (they finally did it) of Let the Bird Fly! the guys sit down (sans Ben despite their best efforts to get him there) to discuss the commencement address This is Water by David Foster Wallace.
