Cultural Exegesis (189)
  1. How many presidents does it take to make us question our confidence in this country? No problem, Jesus will be back soon! Just listen to the preachers tell it like it is, and everything will be ok.
  2. Forget prayer, America needs the use of logic and civilized discourse! So do preachers. What if preachers actually honestly engage the culture instead of cry “martyr”? Ringside meets The Craft of Preaching with special guest Dr. Ben Haupt.
  3. Who is right in these crazy times? The only oppressed One who is not the oppressor: Jesus.
  4. The gospel fires up within us the gratitude, joy, and love to pull off what the law never could get us to do.
  5. Walking on water is what we need. Jesus does it. We got baptism. Float through it all as the Modest Mouse song says!
  6. New normals are always sneaking up on us. Preachers ignore them to their peril and the peril of our hearers.
  7. Kids - you'll never know the freedom of "come home with the streetlights on". But don't worry, be nostalgic for the Gospel of Jesus!
  8. Twenty-first century North American believers face challenges unique in the history of God’s people, for we have an abundance of the material gifts of God unparalleled in human history.
  9. Throughout the centuries and throughout earthquakes, famines, kingdoms falling and rising, God's Word has moved forward. Picking up pieces, people, lives, sins, and hopelessness only to turn them into diamonds through His Grace!
  10. When the direction of preaching is dictated by the hashtag issues of the day, the pulpit becomes the perpetual servant of CNN and Fox News. The news and social media cycle, with its chameleonic alterations from this all-important issue (this week) to that next-all-important issue (next week), does not create a rhythmic dance for the church but a sort of frenzied whack-a-mole worship. Now smack your homiletical hand down on this…now that…now this…now that. We need something better.
  11. Silence is an important and valuable tool for change and empathy, self-reflection, and learning.
  12. There is a time for justice. And there is a time for love. But love must always have the final word. Jesus must have the final word, because Jesus is God and God is Love.
