1. We have Old Testament scholar, Chad Bird, on to discuss with us the ways we twist the book of Proverbs into a prosperity gospel, especially in regard to our ideas of family.
  2. Life can get so complicated, so full of mind numbing details and various pains that it's easy to wish we lived in a simpler time.
  3. It can all seem so unfair. The wicked prosper and the ones who look to God seem to suffer the most.
  4. Pain and suffering; it can feel like punishment from an angry God, and we try to figure out the cause, to our own frustration.
  5. Waiting on God can seem like slow motion torture sometimes.
  6. Men and women are all caught in the universal machine of suffering that chews people up and spits them out. And in their respective griefs and fears, they are all wondering if God sees them, hears them, knows them.
  7. "Come to me, all you who are weary of being you, and simply be mine."
  8. Using agricultural images, the Psalmist speaks of suffering and the persecutions that Israel endures.
  9. One of my jobs in high school was helping local ranchers work cattle. We’d vaccinate, cut off horns, castrate, mark their ears, and brand them.
  10. We tell our children if they work hard and play by the rules, they’ll succeed in life. Jerks, cheaters, and thieves won’t. They’ll end up in the gutter. Or jail. Or worse.
  11. In the tiny Bible-belt town where I grew up, tragedy brought people together.
  12. From the untouchable living on the streets of India to the millionaire in Manhattan; from the farmer in Germany to the escort in Vegas; from the missionary in Argentina to the bartender in Ireland—they are all in the love zone of the Lord. Every. Single. One.
