Salvation (840)
  1. Terror and even hatred of God are the only things with which divine hiddenness can leave us.
  2. I suggest preaching a sermon that directs attention away from the main characters. Instead, highlight for your hearers (and proclaim loudly and clearly) the promise of Jesus in this text.
  3. The law does not end sin, does not make new beings, it only makes matters worse.
  4. Our scars are a reminder that salvation is all gift.
  5. This text gives us only a glimpse, a preview, of God’s plan in Christ to restore his broken creation to its physical and social perfection.
  6. For a long time, well-intentioned pastors and college evangelists have applied Jesus’ words from Revelation 3:20 to the unconverted.
  7. The message of forgiveness of sins is and will always be what makes Church, Church.
  8. Imagine what it would be like if, when people in our community thought about this congregation, the first thing that came to mind was how forgiving we are.
  9. The optimism of a Christian extends beyond the deathbed and has its origin in a historical event without historical boundaries.
  10. How can we know the mysterious workings of God? We look to Jesus: Jesus does His job of Jesus-ing only the way He can Jesus. Jesus never did His Messiah work the way that people thought that He should, and nothing has changed. We are blessed that He is not a God created of our own image and imagination. All of this is revealed to us through the God’s word alone, and in that word we have comfort of what Christ has done for us.
  11. The gospel is a one-way rescue by God, through Jesus, for sinners, courtesy of the Holy Spirit exploding faith into an individual who is hearing the good news.
  12. How do you know you are truly repentant? Does your life have to be wrecked by some special sin before you know the Gospel?
