  1. What does being free from sin, which is obviously a good thing, have to do with being free from the Law, which sounds dangerous?
  2. The church does well to remind the world that God is unmasked, indeed, that God has unmasked himself in the person of Jesus.
  3. Our forefathers dedicated Holy Cross Day to jolt the Church into remembrance that Christianity is not principally about ethics.
  4. No good will come to the cause of the Gospel by followers of Jesus being regarded as crazy dissidents who will not cooperate with the most basic social mechanisms.
  5. Our stories, be they ever so inspiring or worthy of emulation, should never be equated with proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Gospel Jesus Christ commissioned to be proclaimed.
  6. Cliché preaching may be symptomatic of shallow, consumerist culture, perpetuating a problem rather than the solution.
  7. Are people so different today? Is justification really irrelevant now? Is the preacher’s only point of contact with the life-giving Gospel a by-product of Microsoft’s word processor? I do not think so.
  8. The preached word ensured the work of the Holy Spirit, so long as it was the written word of the Gospel. Gospel preaching was the one domain in which we could be assured of the convicting, saving, and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit.
