New Testament (1597)
  1. Jesus died for the people who put Him to death. Jesus rose for the people whose minds rejected the idea of a resurrection.
  2. The sacrifice of Jesus stands completed, once for all, and we believe in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
  3. Betrayed. It is a word which chills the soul and sickens the stomach. To be betrayed is to have a friend turn on you, treating you as an enemy.
  4. For God so loved Nicodemus, the world, and you.
  5. The image on Palm Sunday is about something so primordial, so powerful and ancient, so deep, that it would shatter any kind of limits. It would break through any attempt to restrain it.
  6. In the middle of the cosmic, creedal story, Paul places us, you and me, and all of those who belong by faith to Christ.
  7. Jesus: Wine maker and temple cleanser.
  8. Paul puts everything he has gained by his religious life and training (verses 4-7) onto the scales opposite life with Christ and finds a real bargain.
  9. This living Word breaks and crushes. It comes down as crushing judgment on those who reject the Son. But it promises to heal and restore all those who fall on the Son broken, contrite, and in faith.
