Daily Bread & Bread of Life

Jesus is faithful, loving, and kind. He gladly helps everybody and is good to everyone. This is what it means that He’s God and Savior. So, we look to Him for everything good. In this way, we learn to trust Him and depend on Him for every spiritual good too. Jesus feeds our stomach so that we can trust Him to feed and clothe our soul too.

If we can't trust Jesus to care for our body now, how can we trust Him to always care for our soul? Or, to put it another way, if we can't trust a person to give us one dollar, how can we trust him to give us ten or a thousand or a billion dollars? If we can't expect a person to give us a piece of bread, how can we have any hope that he will give us a house, and a yard, and the whole earth?

When we doubt what Jesus does for us, we begin to doubt his faithful, loving, kindness. Then we become unloving and start to look for how we can take whatever is within reach. We become unfaithful, turn our back on Jesus, and steal, lie, and cheat people. We become unkind and make our way in life the best we can without any trust that God always takes care of us. That's what our unbelief does.

But when we trust Jesus, then we close our eyes to it all and say, "Heavenly Father, I'm your child. You created me. I'll depend on You because You care more for me than I care about myself. You will feed me, clothe me, and help me where and when You know best. Amen.”

But when we trust Jesus, then we close our eyes to it all and say, “Heavenly Father, I’m your child.

So, for example, in the wilderness, with Jesus the crowds had a safe place to sit and rest. Jesus says to His disciples: "I have compassion on them, because they have continued with me now for three days and have nothing to eat, and if I send them away hungry to their homes they'll collapse on the way” (Mark 8:2-3).

This is the kind of Savior we have. Jesus even provides food for our stomach. When our belly is full of food, we are satisfied. When we are satisfied, we can rest. When we can rest, we have new hope because we are comforted by Jesus’ words when He says: "They lie there and wait for me until the third day. I must give them what they need.” That’s why we trust and hope that Jesus will always care for us, both in body and soul, now and always.

On the other hand, why do we think there are so many gossips and thieves, so many frauds, crooked bankers and politicians, murderers, and lying preachers? Why do we think they tell us that we can buy our way into God's good grace through our hard work, sacrifice, and offerings of money and time? This way of talking and doing all comes from unbelief.

Those people judge what God does and doesn’t do for them based on the size of their bellies. They judge God’s faithfulness and truthfulness only by what they can put their hands on and stuff into their mouths. But what they can’t grab and stuff into their mouths they don't care about and don't want. As a result, they don't cling to Jesus. They become hopeless and turn into murders, cheaters, and liars.

We cling to Him in our times of need. We sit down and rest in Him, and in Him alone. Our trust and hope aren’t in what we can grab and stuff in our mouth.

But for Christians, we know Jesus is our God and Savior. We cling to Him in our times of need. We sit down and rest in Him, and in Him alone. Our trust and hope aren’t in what we can grab and stuff in our mouth. We trust and hope in Jesus and expect Him to feed our body and soul. And Jesus who is faithful, loving, and kind to us will help us. Don't doubt Him for one second. Jesus cares for us, body and soul, with daily bread and the Bread of Life. And, most important, at the Last Day we will sit with Him at the feast of the Lamb that has no end.
