Pentecost (669)
  1. None have done our duty of forgiving perfectly. We need help, and we do well to ask the One who sent us.
  2. This is theology of the cross. It is a treasure in jars of clay, surpassing power, and faith in folks like Timothy and Paul and in little old ladies like Eunice and Lois.
  3. For Habakkuk and us, waiting is the hardest part and the only thing he has from God as He waits, the only thing that helps him, is faith.
  4. It is shocking to hear this word from both these readings, but it is meant to shock us to life, to wake us from the slumber of complacency, to see Christ in our neighbor.
  5. The only God to invest in is Jesus Christ who bids us follow.
  6. God chooses the foolish things of this world to shame the wise, the poor people of this world to shame the rich, he identifies with sinners and He cannot seem to get enough of those the world ignores.
  7. Trusting the Master to show mercy, he shows mercy in the name of the Master.
  8. God in Christ shows us how to lift up holy hands.
  9. So, you have God’s generosity on the one hand and the greed of the elite on the other. Which would you rather have? Unjust scales or a scale breaking generous God?
  10. Preaching this text is to call for joy, joy for the fellowship that has been found, the fellowship that gathers together this very day.
