New Testament (1704)
  1. This time of year, the preacher can be tempted to focus so much on the deeds of the saints and others, that they miss what makes a person a saint in the first place: Christ’s atoning blood.
  2. If you have ever felt like you are standing on the outside looking in, like you do not belong in a beautiful church with its beautiful people, then listen to Jesus, because Jesus has a word for you.
  3. Wash or don’t wash your hands.
  4. While today we read all of the names of those who have departed this year, we do not lump them all together. Instead, we are asked to see them as God sees them, as individuals.
  5. Our hope of a joyful reunion with our loved ones who died confessing the name of Jesus is as sure and certain as the death and resurrection of Jesus.
  6. If we picture the New Testament as a divinely painted masterpiece that hangs in the middle of a museum, then all around it are other works of the period, in different corridors of the museum, in many styles, painted by diverse artists, with variations of color and technique.
  7. The faithful who gather for worship have heard and believed this promise, and they too are saved. But they need to hear it again.
  8. The Reformation not only uncovered the Good News of the Gospel, but it also put the Law of God back in its proper place in the life of the Church.
