Outline, Notes, Links, Readings, Nicknames all online

Gregory of Nazianzus (329-390)

1 of the Cappadocian Fathers along with Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa

1 of the 3 Holy Hierarchs along with Basil and John Chrysostom.

1 of the “Doctors” of the Church in Roman Catholicism

Life Arc: Student/Monk/Bishop/Theologian

Big Moment: Presided over the Council of Constantinople where the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed was accepted

Known For: being a defender of the Deity of the Holy Spirit

“But of the wise men amongst ourselves, some have conceived of him as an Activity, some as a Creature, some as God; and some have been uncertain which to call Him, out of reverence for Scripture, they say, as though it did not make the matter clear either way. And therefore they neither worship Him nor treat Him with dishonor, but take up a neutral position, or rather a very miserable one, with respect to Him.”

Tri-theist? His response:

“No sooner do I conceive of the one than I am illumined by the splendor of the three; no sooner do I distinguish them than I am carried back to the one.”

The Last Word:

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John 16)
