Lectionary: Series A (534)
  1. Jesus comes for those who are affected by the long darkness of sin and destruction. Jesus breaks the power of this present darkness with His Word, more specifically His preaching.
  2. In the middle, the thrill of extremes settles into the boredom of routines. For followers of Jesus, this can lead in several problematic directions.
  3. There is good news here for your hearer, good news of belonging.
  4. This is a salutary commemoration of the confession we share, and an opportunity to give thanksgiving to Jesus for choosing this holy man of God to receive, believe, and share the gospel of our salvation!
  5. It is hard to believe, but somehow it is better for followers of Jesus that Jesus has gone away. Otherwise, the Spirit would not have come.
  6. The brief introduction to the letter stands in marked contrast to the spanking the saints of Corinth will get through the balance of the letter.
  7. The reason why Jesus is such a good deliverer is because He has already gone the way we have to go from death to life.
  8. Like John, we know some things about Jesus, and the things we know are very important. But there are other things about Jesus and His ways which elude us.
  9. In the servant song of chapter 42, God responds to the people. He responds by choosing His humble Servant to bring the right way to God’s people and to all the nations.
  10. As you look to the water of your own baptism, consider not that the water is wet, but, rather, that it is rich with the Word and promise of God for one reason only: Because Jesus is in that water.
