Forgiveness (362)
  1. God has forgiven you. That is an objective fact. You can reject it, but it is nevertheless true.
  2. All of these episodes should be personal, to some extent. After all, these aren't static, other-worldly doctrines but we are dealing with the message of life itself. But there is something especially personal about taking the whole theological enterprise and focusing it on your own particular problem: sin. And not abstract sin, but the real stuff.
  3. Jesus’ forgiveness will not collapse. Jesus’ forgiveness will take us places our legs can’t take us.
  4. I visited a senior man at his home the other day. I'll refer to him as “Jim.”
  5. She was my friend, walking through marriage troubles. Her husband was unfaithful to her, with the technicalities and carefully drawn lines of “not technically sex” and justifying himself, which had wounded her deeply.
  6. For on the other side of the death of forgiveness is the resurrection of joy. An easter in which we emerge from the tomb in the arms of the man whose scars glow with mercy.
  7. Jesus dies for the sin of the world. That means he dies for the person who disappoints us. He shed His blood for the person who doesn’t love us the way we want to be loved.
  8. Our goal is to proclaim the genuine good news—that’s what “Gospel” means—of Christ’s forgiveness for you. We do not offer you better tips, techniques or checklists. Instead, You Are Forgiven is sermons by faithful pastors who will clearly show how you cannot be forgiven by your own efforts, no matter how well you do on your homework, your checklist of tasks. But they will also show how you are actually and already forgiven because Jesus has done all that is needed, for you!
  9. Nothing is easier than making grace unamazing. Just do what comes naturally.
  10. To be sure, the devil has an incredible arsenal of assaults with which he can waylay believers into ineptitude and ineffectiveness.
  11. Why confess sin? Is it so we can get rewarded by God? A little extra grace or material good for our troubles, maybe.
  12. Let's face it, Christianity is not for everyone.
