  9. In the 1st century, the Scribes and Pharisees were the "good guys." They were the teachers and leaders of Israel, and highly esteemed by most Jewish people. This video surveys the history and importance of both religious groups, as well as helps us understand why they were opposed to Jesus. We also take a look at the Old Testament background of the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15.
  10. Does Jesus want us to hate the members of our own family? In Luke 14:26, he says that if anyone comes to him and does not "hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple." In this video, we look at these words (and the surrounding context) through Hebrew eyes and hear it with Hebrew ears. The Torah helps us to understand these difficult words of Jesus in a new light.
  11. The Hebrew and Old Testament background of Luke 13:22-30. We'll see how Jesus is using Isaiah 25, Psalm 6, and other OT passages to talk about the kingdom, patriarchs, Gentiles, and the gnashing of teeth.
  12. In Luke 12:22-39, Jesus uses a common rabbinic device to interpret the Scriptures; draws from numerous passages in Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Daniel, and 1 Kings to encapsulate his teaching on the kingdom of God; and parallels the story of Solomon asking God for a lev shomea (“a listening heart”). All of this and more is elaborated in this video.
  13. When we compare contemporary rabbinic writings with Jesus's interaction with Mary and Martha in Luke 10, we see how he was bucking the rabbinic system of the day. His double repetition of Martha's name is extremely important when viewed in the light of the Old Testament. And in his description of Martha as "distracted," Jesus uses a colorful Greek verb that has its roots in the Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Scriptures. We look at all this and more in this video.
