1. Rituals, like the liturgy and the sacraments, resist domestication and confront us with a world and worldview brought forth from the Bible and through twenty centuries of Christianity for the purpose of arresting our contemporary worldview through its self-sameness.
  2. God reveals Himself as a tender-hearted, deeply caring parent—even to the point of deeply grieving over us when we stop listening to Him. But in Job, and sometimes in our daily experience, He reveals Himself as a whole lot more.
  3. Using Easter means the peace of Christ is to be preached into the conscience of those held captive by sin and death.
  4. Preaching the inseparability of Jesus and Jerusalem is to proclaim God’s Messiah and the fulfillment of the Scriptures.
  5. That Jesus is risen from the dead means, now and forever, Satan is bound, and it is determined he has no right to try to have a say in our lives.
  6. What all variations of affable chatter share in common is that the preacher does not do justice to the most salient fact about him and his hearers: They are dead men walking.
  7. Baxter is concerned that much of the Church’s preaching has become either too moralistic or too spiritualized. What’s his answer to this problem? Expository preaching.

  10. Behind the preacher stands Christ Jesus. Preachers listen to Jesus so that, in turn, they may preach Him, and their congregations may hear the voice of the Good Shepherd from the mouths of their pastors.
  11. Sin affects body and soul, right down to the core of our humanity. It calls for a drastic cure, for extreme measures.
  12. But what God’s people want and need more than a perfect sermon, or even necessarily a polished one, is a true one.
