Christian Freedom (181)
  1. Christianity does not locate freedom in radical autonomy. It does not tell either men or women that happiness consists in escaping obligations arising from relationships we did not entirely choose.
  2. Jesus never promised me a World Series championship. He never promised that my children would always succeed or that life would go according to plan. He promised something better.
  3. Through baptism, absolution, and the Lord’s Supper, Christ meets you with his radical forgiveness which changes everything, even the self!
  4. Christ’s saving work is finished, but his love is not locked away in the past.
  5. For many years, I held piety as my god.
  6. When we despair of ourselves, we repent of these self-justifying schemes and allow ourselves to be shaped by God, covered in Christ’s righteousness, and reborn with a new heart.
  7. For the Christian, the iron gate of death was opened by the blood of Christ and the empty tomb.
  8. Curiosity, while it might kill the cat, just might be one of the most needed virtues of our time.
  9. Wisdom and strength require bootstrap-pulling and the placing of noses to grindstones.
  10. “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
  11. “Fruit” is the Christian character, the thing that spills out from all who have the spirit of God delivered to them in their baptism.
  12. Little Willy Plays in Duty. In this episode, we read Steven Paulson’s Outlaw God, discussing the appeal of the Law (in the abstract), why old Adam loves pretending he has free will, the Ninevite Conundrum, Jonah’s wormy preacher, and our obsession with placing therapy alongside Christ as a means of grace.
