How Awesome Are Your Deeds!

Reading Time: 3 mins

God's power and works are awesome and cannot be stifled. His grace and mercy will be heard above the growls and howls of those who deny Christ Jesus is God and Savior

Imagine seeing the waters of the Red Sea part. How many of our jaws would have dropped at the sight? How many of us would have thought, "This can't be possible." But, it happened. The children of Israel stood on the shore and witnessed their God do the impossible. Truly, it would have been an awesome thing to witness. But, all the works of God are awesome, not just parting the Red Sea. God does the impossible so that we may know with certainty that it is our God who's at work for us.

Pharaoh's magicians attempted to match God's works through sleight of hand and deception. And, at first, it appeared they were performing the same impossible works as Israel's God. But, they couldn't keep up. They couldn't match God's power and works.

Through the Lord's power and works the children of Israel were rescued from the power of Pharaoh. It was such an awe-inspiring feat that many years later, the Psalmist reminded Israel and their neighbors that through the power and works of God, friend and foe alike must recognize the awesome works of God.

The Psalmist put it this way:

Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you... Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man." (Psalm 66:3,5)

Many people will claim they believe in a god. Many recognize a higher power created the universe and everything therein. But they are willfully blind to God's power and works. God's awesome work is being done in the air they breathe, in the food that nourishes their body, and in all the works of nature. It's one thing to acknowledge that there is a god or higher power that made everything. It's another thing altogether to confess in faith that God's work is intended to lead us to redemption from the power and works of sin, death, and Satan.

Through the cross of Christ Jesus, the most awesome work of God occurred. The grace and mercy of the Lord paid for the sin of the world. At Golgotha, God provided eternal life for us. Even more than the waters of the Red Sea, the cross of Jesus compels us to exclaim: "Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man." (Psalm 66:5)

Standing before the cross in our homes, or at our church, we see in faith that Jesus is God. We witness the awesome power and work revealed in the weakness and humiliation of his public execution. We confess the awesome power and works of God for us to friend and foe alike. We recognize and acknowledge that human power can bring a man to his knees, but only God's love put on full display at Calvary can capture a person's heart.

Just like the children of Israel, we cannot rescue ourselves from our Pharaoh, who is Satan. He rules over us with his rod and staff - sin and death. His "magi" deceive us with their lies and deceptions in such a way that we are enslaved and unable to free ourselves from his tyranny. Only the awesome power and works of God can rescue us from our plight.

God's power and works are awesome and cannot be stifled. His grace and mercy will be heard above the growls and howls of those who deny Christ Jesus is God and Savior. Like the psalmist, say to God:

“How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you... Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man." (Psalm 66:3,5)

Our tongues proclaim and sing about the power and works of our God alone. This preachment will be heard above the shouts of those who deny that Jesus is Lord and Savior of the world. More than that, he will protect and defend us because his power and works will be made manifest in our lives through the vocations he lays upon us.

The power and works of God are made known through the impossible feats he accomplishes for us, which reach their apex at Golgotha, where our Lord and Savior rescued us from sin, death, and Satan through his bloody suffering and death, and resurrection.

So now we proclaim with the children of God in every generation, “How awesome are your deeds!"
