Do Angels Really Protect Us?

Reading Time: 2 mins

Our Lord's love for us is so great that He not only sent His Son to redeem us from sin, death, and hell, but He sends His holy angels to protect us no matter which direction our lives go.

Satan is always using whatever is at hand to mislead us in any way he can. But, his favorite tactic is to weaponize God's Word to lead us away from God through a show of fidelity and piety. He went after Jesus this way, using our Lord's own words against Him. Satan said to Jesus, "He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone." (Psalm 91:11; Matthew 4:6) A good verse to tempt anyone with, appealing to our desire for safety, but he left out something important. Satan omitted the most important part of the verse, "to guard you in all your ways."

Satan's use of the psalm gives us the impression that should Jesus throw Himself off the temple roof, the angels would still protect Jesus. This is true, God does send His holy angels to take care of people. However, this promise is valid only to those who trust the Lord to care for them and deliver them from evil, it's not a promise given to those who intentionally defy and set aside God's Word.

When our heavenly Father promises that "no evil will befall you, nor any plague come near your dwelling, because He will give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways," He's referring to His children. (Psalm 91:10-11)
One angel is strong enough to annihilate 185,000 soldiers of Sennacherib's army in one night, then when the Lord puts one of His angels in charge of each of us, that angel will certainly be able to care for us and our needs. So think for a moment about the army of angels that watch over us every day. Think about how much protection is for us in our daily lives.

Our heavenly Father's promise is so sure that He sends His holy angels to minister to His children because we are heirs of salvation. (Hebrews 1:14) Our Lord's love for us is so great that He not only sent His Son to redeem us from sin, death, and hell, but He sends His holy angels to protect us no matter which direction our lives go.

Under the cross of Christ, with God's holy angels watching over us, what can Satan do to us? We go from strength to strength with our Lord and Savior and His army of angelic beings.

God's holy angels are with His children to protect us wherever we go and especially amid fear, anxiety, and affliction. One of the Lord's angels is stronger than a million of the devil's angels so we have nothing to fear from Satan.

That's we join Dr. Martin Luther, who prayed every morning and evening in his prayers, "Let your holy angel be with me that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen."
